Irish Dance Flooring
Harlequin Floors are renowned for providing resilient and resonant flooring suitable for percussive dance styles such as Irish dancing. By investing in a professional Irish dancing flooring solution, risk of injury through repetitive strain, slips or falls will be mitigated. Dancers will have greater confidence to perform and practice knowing that our Irish dance floors are designed specifically for percussive dance.
Harlequin’s floors have been designed to meet the needs of the Irish dance community. Irish dancing is a unique and distinctive dance style often characterised by the dancer’s rigid upper body and intricate footwork. Our Irish dance floors absorb the shock caused by repetitive movement, lessening the impact on joints and reducing the risk of injury.
We offer a range of Irish dance flooring solutions including Cascade, Standfast, Reversible Pro, Reversible and Fiesta. Each material is designed to be hard-wearing and to allow for a degree of sound projection. In addition to our dance floor products, Harlequin offers a range of stage building and installation services, where our team of specialists will work with your in-house designers to create a perfect stage for practice and performances.
Designed and developed specifically for percussive dance
An Irish dance floor from Harlequin Floors is designed and developed specifically for percussive dance. It is heavy-duty in nature to enhance its resilience to the stepdance style of Irish dancing without being damaged. By installing a professional Irish dance floor, you can be assured that the flooring solution will have a longer life-span than most alternatives.
Harlequin Floor’s Irish dance floor solutions are resonant to ensure a deep, clear tone is produced when the shoe strikes the floor; a key element of what makes Irish dancing unique and distinctive from other types of dance. Whether it’s a permanent solution or a portable Irish dance floor, we have a range of flooring materials which can accommodate all needs.
Harlequin’s expert teams travel globally installing Irish dance flooring in a wide range of venues, from local studios to some of the world’s most prestigious dance academies.

Experience
Harlequin’s experience and expertise in dance
Harlequin is widely recognised as the world’s leading authority on dance floors. Harlequin has always worked closely with the dance community to develop floors that dancers want to dance on. Flooring products in the Harlequin portfolio have evolved to meet the specific needs of a particular dance style and have been developed in conjunction with dancers themselves.
Aware of the high injury level among dancers, Harlequin is an active supporter of IADMS (International Association for Dance Medicine and Science) and of NIDMS (National Institute of Dance Medicine and Science). NIDMS, through shared expertise and a network of multidisciplinary partners, is working to provide better and more affordable access for all dancers to high quality, evidence-based, dance specific health care and dance science supported services.
Harlequin also provides backing and support for research work and is leading the quest for a relevant international standard for dance floors that can, in due course be referred to in specification documents. Meanwhile the information derived from research studies already informs new product development.
We also offer stage building and refurbishment services for large-scale professional performances as well as historic buildings and ballet wagons.

Related FAQs
Can you install my floor for me?
Our vinyl and sprung dance floors can be fitted by our highly-skilled technical team as part of our total package to ensure your new floor is correctly installed and is fully compliant with current regulations and standards. We also offer services in specialised stage building for larger venues or ballet wagons. Contact us for further information.
What type of surface or sub-floor can a Harlequin vinyl floor be laid on?
A Harlequin vinyl floor can be laid onto most level sub-floors, including concrete, wood or tiles, although we don’t advise laying onto carpet. If a sub-floor is not level or is unacceptably hard, then a Harlequin sprung floor can be used in conjunction with a Harlequin performance surface (vinyl floor, hardwood or engineered board). If you are worried whether your existing floor is suitable, please contact us to discuss your requirements.
How can a Harlequin vinyl floor be laid?
A permanent vinyl floor is stuck down with adhesive and can’t be removed without risking damage to the floor. A semi-permanent vinyl floor is loose-laid using double-sided tape and then welded at the seams. The seams can later be cut and the floor taken up. A portable vinyl floor is rolled out and the seams are either covered with tape or temporarily secured to the sub-floor on the underside with double-sided tape.
