Lancaster Grand Theatre Renovate Its Stage Surface with Harlequin Rocksure

Lancaster Grand Theatre has upgraded its auditorium with the installation of a Harlequin Rocksure stage surface, investing in stage quality, consistency and performer confidence.

As the third oldest working theatre in the UK outside of London, this Grade II listed venue continues to serve as a hub for the performing arts, offering a diverse programme of shows throughout the year.

During the theatre’s dark period late last year, when no performances were taking place, Lancaster Grand Theatre decided it was time to renovate the stage. The decision followed a careful evaluation, including practical tests with dancers to gather feedback.

Mark Hutton, Chair of Trustees at Lancaster Grand Theatre, said: “When we tested the Harlequin Rocksure product, we brought in dancers from a local school as well as members of our own amateur society. One of their key comments was how much they valued the consistent feel of the Harlequin Rocksure stage floor, particularly because it was flatter than our existing stage. For certain dance styles, especially tap, that consistency really helps.”

Harlequin Rocksure is designed to deliver a durable, stable and consistently even performance surface, making it ideal for theatres and performance venues where reliability is crucial. This extremely hard-wearing, water-resistant stage surface offers a matt black alternative to traditional options such as wood, painted “sacrificial” hardboard layers or heavy-duty vinyl.

Installation of the stage flooring was carried out by a dedicated team of theatre staff and volunteers, whose efforts exceeded expectations. Ryan Mason, Deputy Theatre Manager, said: “The team of volunteers that put this staging down have just blown my mind with the work that they’ve done. Their dedication and efficiency leave me completely speechless.”

Ryan also highlighted Harlequin’s valuable communication with trustees and theatre members. He said: “Harlequin has been extremely helpful in guiding our trustees and members, explaining the product, how it’s installed and the benefits it brings to our theatre.”

With the new Harlequin Rocksure stage surface in place, Lancaster Grand Theatre has already enjoyed a successful panto season and will continue hosting a busy schedule of professional touring companies, as well as amateur drama, music and dance groups.
